Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites and are spread through sexual contact with an infected person. There are many types of STD, including:
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Herpes
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
- Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
- Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
- Syphilis
- Trichomoniasis
STDs are very common. More than half of all people have an STD at some point in their life. Both men and women are affected, and the health consequences can be serious, particularly for women. The symptoms of STDs can be similar to those of other urological problems, and in many cases there are no noticeable symptoms.
